As the sun dipped behind the historic streets of Ballard Estate, Mumbai, guests stepped into IFBE Space for an evening that celebrated culture in its most immersive form. Durbar Evenings by Godawan brought together music, gastronomy, and storytelling, creating a refined experience that felt both intimate and memorable.

Created by Godawan, Diageo India's luxury single malt whisky, in collaboration with experiential agency Swordfish, Durbar Evenings is a multi-city cultural festival series inspired by the spirit of India's royal gatherings. Rather than relying on scale or spectacle, the experience is built around meaningful moments—where music, design, and hospitality come together in a thoughtfully curated setting.

At the heart of the Mumbai edition was a performance by acclaimed sitar virtuoso Niladri Kumar. A fifth-generation musician known for pushing the boundaries of classical music, Kumar captivated the audience with a set that moved effortlessly between traditional ragas and contemporary sounds. His signature invention, the Zitar, a five-string electric sitar, added a distinctive layer to the performance, creating a sound that felt both rooted in heritage and refreshingly modern.

The choice of venue played a significant role in shaping the evening's atmosphere. Known for its industrial architecture and creative energy, IFBE Space provided the perfect backdrop for an experience centred around artistry and connection. Warm lighting, carefully designed spaces, and a close-up performance format allowed guests to engage with the music in a way that felt personal and immersive.

Beyond the music, the evening unfolded as a celebration of culinary craftsmanship. Guests were treated to a curated menu inspired by regional Indian flavours, complemented by thoughtfully crafted cocktails featuring Godawan Single Malt. Every element of the experience reflected the event's commitment to showcasing Indian excellence through a contemporary lens.

What makes Durbar Evenings particularly unique is the purpose behind it. Named after the Great Indian Bustard—locally known as the Godawan—the platform also aims to raise awareness about one of India's most critically endangered bird species. By combining culture, storytelling, and conservation, the festival creates conversations that extend beyond the evening itself.

In a world where experiences are often designed for scale, Durbar Evenings offered something more meaningful: an opportunity to slow down and appreciate the artistry behind every detail. Through music, cuisine, conservation, and craftsmanship, the evening captured the essence of conscious luxury while celebrating India's rich cultural heritage.
